Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip To The Moon) Georges Méliès 1902 12mins

This famous film is considered to be the first science-fiction film in cinematic history. A group of astronomers in constellation-covered robes decide to construct a rocket and travel to the Moon. They land in the poor man-in’the-moon’s eye, and set off to explore the Moon's surface. They encounter strange moon inhabitants called Selenites, and return to Earth, bringing one back home in their rocket. Originally silent, before the ‘talkies’ were invented, screenings of the film would have been accompanied by a live musician on piano, who would add drama and emotion to the story. This version’s soundtrack is by David Short & the Billi Brass Quintet

WHY DO WE NEED TO RAISE MONEY?

Mt Victoria village, along with many others, was adversely affected by the 2019/20 bushfires, closely followed by Covid-19, floods and landslips. Locals dealt with sustained, multiple catastrophic events for two and a half years without time to process or recover before the next disaster hit. We have first-hand experience of the terror and decimation the fires caused, resulting in evacuations and long-term psychological effects. Visitors avoided travelling to the Blue Mountains, shops were forced to close during lockdowns, leaving businesses struggling.

A palpable melancholy still exists, a sense of collective mourning for our losses. We are quiet, contemplative, in shock, consoling and coming together wherever it is safe to do so, drawing strength from our communities, and hope from the resilient, regenerating bush. The landscape is still eerily quiet in places, the scale of the losses unprecedented. We know many people share this experience.

    WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?

    Mt Victoria RFS

Mount Victoria Community Association to support local improvements

Local youth support organisation MYST (Mountains Youth Services Team)

HOW WILL LUMIÈRE HELP MOUNT VICTORIA’S COMMUNITY & LOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE?

Lumière is a catalyst to bring people together and attract visitors both local and from further afield. We want to help restore the village’s vibrancy and celebrate new beginnings via engagement with contemporary art. Mount Victoria is small (but perfectly formed) and doesn’t have the tourist footfall of places such as the Three Sisters in Katoomba to keep things ticking over smoothly in challenging times. It works harder with considerably less resources and infrastructure to ensure prosperity. Despite this, the resilient community punches well above it’s weight, and proves every day that small is indeed powerful and beautiful. We’ve met many amazing people and are honoured to be working with the community to present Lumière in this extraordinary place.

As we all know, Covid has forced us to remain apart for a long time, and we haven’t been able to gather or engage with culture as much as we have in the past. It has separated us just when we needed to come together the most. This has deeply affected individuals’ and businesses’ prosperity and wellbeing.

So, through your generous support, this fundraising evening hopes to provide you with a great night, and Mount Victoria with the resources to address and alleviate some of these burdens. We also particularly recognise the need to support young people through these challenging times.

We thank you deeply for your support, and hope you enjoy this special evening.
