MALCOLM MACKENZIE Breathe
Projection, and filmic record (originally a site specific video work, screened on a digital billboard, Fenwick Road, Glasgow, Scotland, 2017)
Hotel Etico @ Mount Victoria Manor
In this fast-paced 21st century world we find ourselves living in, the difficulties faced in trying to disconnect literally and metaphorically, can leave us feeling anxious and stressed. In the city we are exposed every day to numbers of people, vehicles, noise and other stimulants that often do not leave time for slow thought and consideration. Stepping away from the noise of the city, and disconnecting from modern life, can give people a chance to breathe and consider the company and wonder of nature.
The work reminds viewers of the importance of taking a step back from some of the challenges faced by city living. Through the use of a large corporate advertising screen, my aim is to instigate conversation and explore ideas pertaining to the commodification of our rural landscapes and fresh air.
Malcolm Mackenzie is an artist living in Plockton, Lochalsh, on the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands. Malcolm’s practice centres around ideas of social and community engagement. Location is central to his projects, where he sees himself as a facilitator and looks for creative opportunities that bring people together, encouraging collaboration in order to explore unique landscapes, open dialogues and to offer a chance for people to share the story of their local area, with each other, or to a wider audience.
